Lane Riggs has captivated both RC enthusiasts and real-life off-roaders with his breathtaking RC overland creations. The level of realism he achieves with his models often blurs the line between the miniature and the full-scale worlds.
In this special feature, we present one of Riggs’ remarkable masterpieces, the custom-built RC4WD Trail Finder 2 Toyota 4Runner truck, which is accompanied by a meticulously detailed 1/10-scale Integy off-road camping trailer. Prepare to be awestruck by the astonishing lifelike detailing and accessories meticulously integrated into this extraordinary build.
A Vision Takes Shape
From the moment Lane Riggs laid eyes on RC4WD’s Limited Edition 1985 Toyota 4Runner, he knew he had found the foundation for his next project. Eager to bring his vision to life, he swiftly acquired the truck from his local hobby shop, Smoke Stack Hobby Shop in Lancaster, Ohio.
But rather than diving into the build right away, he spent months carefully sourcing and acquiring various components, patiently waiting for parts to become available.
Perfecting the Details
Riggs’ commitment to perfection is evident in the numerous upgrades and enhancements he made to the RC4WD 4Runner. He replaced the stock gears in the axles with the precision-engineered RC4WD bevel gear set, enhancing performance and durability.
Additionally, he added eye-catching red Rancho differential covers and a set of Rancho-branded shocks to match the aesthetic of his Rancho steering stabilizer.
Crafting the Overland Aesthetic
For Riggs, the build was not just about performance but also about capturing the essence of the overland style. Adding custom bumpers, sliders, a roof rack, and a winch became essential elements on his to-do list. The front of the truck boasts the impressive CCHand Thrust bumper, specially designed to accommodate a licensed miniature Warn winch, also manufactured by RC4WD.
On the rear, a billet aluminum CCHand Velbloud bumper with a tire carrier completes the rugged aesthetic and seamlessly integrates with RC4WD’s 4Runner body.
Setting the Scene with Scale Accessories
One of the highlights of Riggs’ creation is the meticulous attention to detail in the selection and placement of scaled accessories. Various renowned brands make an appearance, with parts sourced from RC4WD, such as the scale Warn PullzAll tool and a Warn Snatchblock, both neatly tucked away in the back of the SUV. Keen observers will also spot the presence of ARB tow straps, an ARB fridge freezer and an ARB awning, further enhancing the truck’s authentic overland theme.
Additionally, he added a metal chainsaw and sand ladder, opting for the realism of metal over plastic whenever possible. A treasure trove of scale accessories fills the truck, including big subwoofers, inexpensive Pelican-style cases, and more.
The Perfect Companion
To complement the stunning RC4WD Toyota SUV, Lane Riggs added a fully functional 1/10-scale aluminum overland camping trailer by Integy. Every detail of it has been considered, from the spare tire and CCHand Trasharoo bag to the meticulously arranged scale items in the storage compartments, including a scale oil pan and toolbox.
The tent’s posts are neatly stowed away inside the trailer, while the exterior proudly displays an SBC camp stove and a range of aluminum accessories from RC4WD, such as the Hi-Lift jack and foldable land anchor. To ensure convenience during the overland adventure, Riggs equipped the trailer with a propane tank for the camp stove and a generator. Adding to the realism, he even incorporated a canoe and fishing gear scavenged from a Walmart toy.
Lighting Up the Night
No detail is too small for Riggs. Illumination played a crucial role in bringing the RC4WD 4Runner and the camping trailer to life. The lighting system features RC4WD’s downscaled Baja Designs pod lights mounted on the front bumper, and a Baja Designs light bar positioned on the cab’s roof. RC4WD’s Basic Lighting System for the 1985 4Runner provides additional lighting inside the body, ensuring a striking presence during nighttime adventures.
A Triumph of Scale Realism
Lane Riggs’ overland build is a testament to his passion, patience, and unwavering commitment to realism. The overwhelmingly positive response from those who have seen his creation is a testament to his extraordinary talent.
