Sean P. Holman (2m 18s):

Hey, Lighting, Have, You, Heard.

4 (2m 21s):

Good God in heaven. There are just so very many ways for me to say this to you. Never. Not in a million years. Absolutely not. No way, Jose, no chance Lance. And yet Nator. Nah. Uhuh. And of course my own personal favorite of all time, man. Falling off of a cliff.

5 (2m 36s):

No.

Intro (2m 40s):

Always cracks me up. No, I have not heard what you got.

Sean P. Holman (2m 43s):

So, Have, You, Heard that Ford made a crazy announcement about the Super Duty.

Intro (2m 49s):

No, please tell me I how, how did I miss Superduty News?

Sean P. Holman (2m 54s):

All right, so in a press release, the company made the announcement that’s Oakville Assembly Complex, that’s in Canada in Ontario, will begin truck production in 26. So they’re saying it’ll add about a hundred thousand units to Ford’s annual Super duty supply, which is interesting, but it also quote unquote paves the way to bring Multier energy technology to the next generation of Superduty trucks.

Intro (3m 17s):

Oh, I heard a little bit about

Sean P. Holman (3m 19s):

That. Giving customers more freedom of choice in supporting Ford’s electrification plans. Which must mean that the Ford Superduty is getting a hybrid powertrain. Yep.

Intro (3m 29s):

Yeah, yeah, I did hear some rumblings of that but didn’t know the full backstory. Interesting. I I, it makes sense, right? They’re going to supplement, maybe power off the line, add some extra torque again,

Sean P. Holman (3m 42s):

Well I think it’s might be part of like running a job site. I think that’s the bigger tool there. So maybe adds some efficiency to think about this. You work in diesel all the time. Diesel emissions regulations are insane. Getting power, getting up and getting worse. So if you’re forward, you’re saying, well we’ve got a great gas engine. What if we make a hybrid, we can get closer to diesel performance then less than the diesel price. And you have the added benefit of offshoring a bunch of power to run your job site, your house, things like that. The way the F-150 can,

Intro (4m 12s):

I wouldn’t be mad at it. I’ve gotta be honest. I would be open. Okay. I would be very open to that

Sean P. Holman (4m 18s):

And I, my guess would be hybrid V eight, which I happen to think would be cool.

Intro (4m 23s):

Yeah. Did I tell you that we’re going to be at banks launching a new video series about the seven three Godzilla?

Sean P. Holman (4m 30s):

Oh, tell me more.

Intro (4m 32s):

I can’t. Okay. I will just say they weren’t going to be, remember killing a durmax?

Sean P. Holman (4m 36s):

This should have been Holman. Did you hear? Oh

Intro (4m 38s):

Yeah. Holman, did you hear?

Sean P. Holman (4m 39s):

Nope.

Intro (4m 40s):

Okay. You remember killing a durmax where we never actually killed it. We got to 1,004 horsepower.

Sean P. Holman (4m 45s):

I do.

Intro (4m 46s):

Well we were gonna roll that engine back into the cell and then Gail said, Nope, I want do gas and didn’t wanna do a GM gas engine. Interesting. Ls to death, right? Everyone’s been there with an ls. So Godzilla was it. And he loves the fact that they’re winning the horsepower wars now on, they’re winning the horsepower wars for on the diesel side. But he just thought, this is the, this is the engine I wanna explore. All right? And so we are gonna drag it into the dyno cell and connect it to the pump as he says the engine dyno. And we’ll see what it does after we bolt on a turbo or two.

Sean P. Holman (5m 20s):

Hey, Lighting, Have, You Heard. No,

Intro (5m 23s):

No.

Sean P. Holman (5m 23s):

In other four news, if you want a 2024 Ranger Raptor, you have a couple days to order it because order banks are closing on July 31st. So just a couple days after this podcast episode posts.

Intro (5m 37s):

Poor K. Why?

Sean P. Holman (5m 38s):

Because they probably have a finite supply and they’ve sold them all. Hey, Lighting, Have, You, Heard.

6 (5m 45s):

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

Intro (5m 48s):

No, no.

Sean P. Holman (5m 50s):

I don’t know if you caught the I do cars engine tear down video, but they recently did one on the, what they’re calling the worst three liter liter durmax they’ve ever seen that had valve shapes stamped into the pistons. Oh no. And a hole in the cylinder caused by heat. So that’s pretty cool. So if you guys are interested, again, going into your engine destruction theme. Yeah. Head on over to

Intro (6m 16s):

I do cars dot com.

Sean P. Holman (6m 17s):

I do cars on the YouTube page. Okay. And it’s called Seized three liter Durmax 45,000 miles. And the warranty was rejected, apparently due to heat. So anyway,

Intro (6m 28s):

Wait a minute. How can they reject the warranty due to heat?

Sean P. Holman (6m 31s):

Well it says warranty that and that’s why you,

Intro (6m 33s):

How was it operating outside of normal conditions? Listen,

Sean P. Holman (6m 36s):

Go watch the YouTube video.

Intro (6m 37s):

Well, I’m, I’m dying to know were they towing too heavy, like outside of the weight rating. I I don’t, I don’t get it. Do they not put in the right lubricants? I have so many questions.

Sean P. Holman (6m 47s):

Hey, Lighting, Have, You Heard. No. Rivian has said that they have no plans to offer Apple CarPlay. So just like Tesla and GM’s announcement, more and more manufacturers are starting to try and I guess back away from CarPlay. Even though it’s one of the highest demanded options from, I’ll tell you, for me buying my vehicles, it’s a, it’s a must have. But the companies don’t wanna lose control of their users’ in-car experience. And they wanna be able to soak up all that data and not give it to a third party. So

Intro (7m 13s):

I get it. So it’ll have its own interface with a Spotify,

Sean P. Holman (7m 16s):

Well it still has its own interface, but I just You know, especially I’ve said it before, being a journalist driving a lot of different vehicles. CarPlay nice because my experience of NAV and all that’s the same on every vehicle I get into. But I

Intro (7m 26s):

Just like the experience, it’s well laid out.

Sean P. Holman (7m 29s):

It’s just, well yeah, it

Intro (7m 30s):

Just works well and they’ve stripped away all the features. Then they go through a very rigorous process. If you’re an app builder, you can’t just add an app to CarPlay. Yeah, they put you through a litany of tests so you don’t distract the driver and it’s a pain in the ass building an app for CarPlay. But when it finally is approved by Apple, they’re usually pretty nice. Well,

Sean P. Holman (7m 50s):

In rj, SC cr, the founder of Rivian said he wants to bring people’s CarPlay features, but they wanna do it on an all a cart basis. So rather than having the whole CarPlay, they are launching YouTube and Apple Music apps that can run on it. They just don’t want Apple to have the full experience. Mm. So anyway, take it for what it is. I like it. I hope it stays and I know there’s a lot of manufacturers out there committed to it.

Intro (8m 13s):

I do too. Hey Holman, Have You Heard.

Sean P. Holman (8m 15s):

Yes.

Intro (8m 16s):

There’s a recall on my truck.

Sean P. Holman (8m 19s):

Yes, I did hear

Intro (8m 20s):

FCA US LLC has decided that certain 22 Ram 1500 vehicles failed to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard for rear visibility. Is

Sean P. Holman (8m 32s):

That the camera?

Intro (8m 34s):

Why? Yes it is. The radio software in your vehicle may prevent the rear view camera signal from passing through to the media screen. A rear view camera image that does not display decreases the driver’s visibility increasing the risk of crash.

Sean P. Holman (8m 47s):

Did you mess with your head unit at all?

Intro (8m 49s):

Here’s the good news. Your vehicle has already been remedied, so must’ve

Sean P. Holman (8m 55s):

Been over the air software

Intro (8m 56s):

Update or something I love. It’s, I, as much as I hate big brother reaching into my vehicle without me knowing this part is kind of cool. According to our surface records, the radio in your vehicle has already been reprogrammed remotely using our firmware over the air technology. Therefore your vehicle has been remedied. So

Sean P. Holman (9m 11s):

Pretty much a nothing burger.

Intro (9m 14s):

Thanks for reaching out Stellantis.

Sean P. Holman (9m 17s):

So, Lightning, Have, You Heard?

Intro (9m 21s):

No, I don’t think so though.

Sean P. Holman (9m 22s):

A settlement was reached in the Ram Cummins emission lawsuit where certain 2013 to 2015 Ram 2500, 3500 owners will receive compensation. So this is a preliminary settlement. It was a class action lawsuit that involved those trucks of course equipped with the 6.7 liter Cummins. The lawsuit named Chrysler and Cummins as defendants has been caught up in court for seven years. Mm. Chrysler denied all allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the significant costs and disruptions. So if you own one of those trucks, it sounds like you may have a, a little little money coming to you. It says the estimate payout to each eligible truck owner, it’s a $4.8 million settlement.

Sean P. Holman (10m 4s):

It’ll add $1.2 million to fund covering the cost and return fees and stuff. Do you have that truck cool. Benjamin in your pocket?

Intro (10m 14s):

A hundred bucks.

Sean P. Holman (10m 14s):

Hundred bucks.

Intro (10m 15s):

A hundred bucks is, I mean

Sean P. Holman (10m 17s):

The lawyers make all the money. Yeah, they do. I mean it’s, it’s, it’s, it’s disgusting. The

Intro (10m 22s):

Consumer

Sean P. Holman (10m 22s):

Gets the screwed.

Intro (10m 23s):

The question Holman is will that a hundred dollars make up for the loss in fuel economy over the lifespan of that vehicle? Of course not. Based on the firmware update that is said to affect that said fuel

Sean P. Holman (10m 37s):

Economy. Who knows? It said that there were named 17 plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Each of those people that were named that started the class action, they each get $5,000. Which sounds like way more generous than a cool Benjamin.

Intro (10m 50s):

It’s not gonna make up for their time.

Sean P. Holman (10m 52s):

Yeah. Basically the background of the lawsuit was, it was trucks that have SCR systems that didn’t perform as advertised. So that was the, the, the issue and the def the two specific defects were known as the wash coat defect and the flash defect. So they emit illegal levels of pollutants and reduce the fuel efficiency as you said. Hey, Lighting, Have, You, Heard,

Intro (11m 18s):

No. wait, nope.

Sean P. Holman (11m 20s):

I’m pretty excited about this one. The 2025 Nissan Frontier has been spotted.

Intro (11m 25s):

Oh really? In camo or no?

Sean P. Holman (11m 28s):

Yeah, it’s just getting a front and rear. So it’s a mid-cycle refresh. So it’s front and rear styling improvements. Okay. Or updates. But it is also getting a big giant screen in the middle of the dash. So the screen right now is nine inch. Yeah. It’s not bad.

Intro (11m 41s):

No.

Sean P. Holman (11m 41s):

This is a big old, it’s not, it’s bad. This has gotta be 12 inch.

Intro (11m 44s):

So funny. So Gail brought over a, a friend Tim from Sierra Chevy came over. Yeah. And Gail is, we’re trying to buy a 24 Durmax and he wants a work truck. ’cause he doesn’t want like the sunroof and all that

Sean P. Holman (11m 57s):

Whistles. Did he just buy in

Intro (11m 58s):

Colorado? It’s not for him. Oh, okay. It’s for us. ’cause we need it for develop a development mule. ’cause we’re way behind schedule on the 24 stuff. So guys, you can stop asking me, do we have the 24 Darren T? No. Do I have the exhaust system? No. You can thank GM for that. They made it really freaking hard. So we have to buy a truck because we need it so badly. So Tim brings one over and it’s got this tiniest little screen. I didn’t even know they made those anymore. Just, I mean, that’s like a, it’s like a five inch screen smaller than your iPhone screen. It’s ridiculous. So, all right. Casting our eyes up to the pod shed screen I.

Sean P. Holman (12m 31s):

I. See, so he unfortunately didn’t get a front view. The rear is, looks fairly similar with new taillights. Hard to say. The wheels look pretty awesome on this prototype. This looks like a pro four x. And here’s the interior. Look at that screen through the window.

Intro (12m 45s):

Damn. Ah, that’s no joke. So wait a minute. They that’s a whole new dash

Sean P. Holman (12m 50s):

All of it? Yeah. The the, yeah. Basically the center section is all redesigned. Nice.

Intro (12m 54s):

Yeah. ’cause the vents are like are vertical. Yeah. The vents and they pushed them

Sean P. Holman (12m 57s):

Apart. They’re skinny now and they’re pushed apart. Yeah. So I think it looks great.

Intro (13m 1s):

I look how big the knobs are. The volume and the station.

Sean P. Holman (13m 4s):

That’s the other thing. Volume. Volume knobs and Nissan’s did a good job. I, I wasn’t a huge fan of their previous software, but the software that’s in the, the new vehicles, especially the Aria, the Pathfinder, the Z, it’s great. And so having that on the frontier I think is gonna be awesome. The current software in the frontier is really good, but this is the, the next, the next level. I think it’s gonna be great. And again, fricking knobs in a truck Nissan way to

Intro (13m 29s):

Go. So here’s what I’m gonna point out. Let me stand up and go over to the APO head screen. Yep. And I’m gonna point at something that I think you’ll agree is bitching right there,

Sean P. Holman (13m 38s):

The deep center stack for,

Intro (13m 40s):

So right above on the top of the dash it’s got a tray.

Sean P. Holman (13m 43s):

So here’s today’s dash.

Intro (13m 45s):

Yeah.

Sean P. Holman (13m 46s):

And then here’s tomorrow’s dash. So

Intro (13m 47s):

There’s a little bit of a tray, but the new tray is much bigger. Yeah. Above the screen. So you’ve got a bunch of room to like, whether you have like work gloves or your cell phone, whatever. I love that. Position’s smart.

Sean P. Holman (13m 57s):

Here’s what I can’t tell from this photo. So it was a guy in Phoenix shot the, the frontier through his driver’s window through the passenger window of the frontier. While it was hot weather testing in Phoenix. I can’t tell if it has a digital display instrument cluster or not. It’s hard to tell.

Intro (14m 14s):

Oh no, no. Look right

Sean P. Holman (14m 16s):

Here. It looks like gauges. But those are gauges. I don’t know because I have those same gauges on my aria also. That

Intro (14m 21s):

Looks analog

Sean P. Holman (14m 22s):

To me. I know, I’m, I’m I go

Intro (14m 24s):

Way. But could, there are some really good digital that look analog, but that one looks analog to

Sean P. Holman (14m 27s):

Me. He also has a, a soda cup in the frontier. Yeah. In a weird spot. Look where it is. It’s in the passenger seat. It’s passenger seat pa. No, it’s all passenger door panel looks like, no,

Intro (14m 36s):

I think that’s in the passenger seat.

Sean P. Holman (14m 38s):

But then that’s one tall cup of soda. That’s a super tanker of Dr. Pepper I ever saw one.

Intro (14m 44s):

Ah, okay. Well good on Nissan. Yeah.

Sean P. Holman (14m 46s):

That’s cool. I, I’m excited. Hey, Lighting, Have. You Heard, I mean now? No. Okay. So a new version of Ford’s F-150 Lightning ev have been caught. But this one’s not like the, the normal ones. It looks completely different. It was caught testing with a cyber truck and it looks like it might have in hub motor. So is this a heavier duty version of the F-150 Lightning? Hard to say.

Intro (15m 12s):

What is up with the Wheel covers?

Sean P. Holman (15m 15s):

They’re they’re hiding.

Intro (15m 16s):

Yeah, they are. Those are made outta plastic.

Sean P. Holman (15m 18s):

Yeah, those are just literally Wheel covers. Yeah. They’re hiding the view of the hub motors. My guess. ’cause look at this one with the alloy wheels, you can see through the, the photo on a couple of these wheels where it looks like a, a hub motor

Intro (15m 33s):

Man, they go to such great lengths to hide everything. Wow. You You know what those, it’s got this weird material hanging around the bottom perimeter so you can’t see under The truck. Well what it

Sean P. Holman (15m 43s):

Is, is it’s the same stuff that use on RVs as mud flaps and rock flaps on the back of like a, a class A motor home. Gotcha. They just have it on the side. So you can’t see the under p

Intro (15m 52s):

But you can see it, you can tell that there’s batteries hanging down there or something. I mean it’s or

Sean P. Holman (15m 56s):

Or something. You don’t know.

Intro (15m 57s):

I guess you’re right. There’s something back there. Anyway.

Sean P. Holman (16m 0s):

Do we need a heavier duty Lighting?

Intro (16m 5s):

Yes, you do need to

Sean P. Holman (16m 7s):

At that. Any way you want. I

Intro (16m 8s):

No. wait a minute. Here’s what I like about this photo. Why does the cyber truck have tons of sensors all over the passenger side? Because

Sean P. Holman (16m 17s):

They’re collecting data. I know. So they can compare it apples to apples on the same trip, same temperature, same day against their, against their truck.

Intro (16m 25s):

Fascinating. I wonder What, the sensors, those are, I’d love to know what they’re monitoring.

Sean P. Holman (16m 30s):

If you’re a Miss your ex, you can hit us up. Truck show podcast at gmail dot com. Hey, Lighting, Have You Heard

Intro (16m 36s):

I said no, no. Our

Sean P. Holman (16m 39s):

Boys Matt and Nelson over at Truck House, if you remember they were doing that awesome carbon fiber expedition Camper. Yeah. For the back of like a AV

Intro (16m 48s):

Prospector three, $400,000 trucks. Amazing.

Sean P. Holman (16m 52s):

Well, remember we talked about the Tacoma version, right? They have the taco and then they said we’re gonna do it on Rams. Well, the first two prototypes are done. One is a single cab and one is a crew cab and they are freaking awesome. Look at these things. Yeah. That’s them in the flesh.

Intro (17m 6s):

That is very modern. Very modern. Like the whole back half of The truck looks incredibly futuristic

Sean P. Holman (17m 14s):

And it’s all carbon fiber. We’re gonna have those guys back on the show. And they said that they are going to have a truck for us to use. So one of these trucks, once the interior is completed, when you say

Intro (17m 24s):

Used, do you think we can camp in it?

Sean P. Holman (17m 26s):

Yes. That’s the whole point. They want us to take it out. What? Yeah, so we gotta figure that out. So that should be pretty cool. Oh,

Intro (17m 32s):

That side. That’s super cool from the side. Yeah.

Sean P. Holman (17m 35s):

Yeah. So they did a photo shoot of ’em out in the sand dunes and I was hearing from several people who were there, how rad they rode and performed and that it’s just, you wouldn’t believe that there was a motor home on the back. It

Intro (17m 47s):

Looks like it’s very aerodynamic. Yeah, I mean aerodynamic for a fricking

Sean P. Holman (17m 52s):

Camper show. But you look up here, they have, they have air curtains and this was all done for Arrow at the top.

Intro (17m 57s):

I wonder if those are live, like do they

Sean P. Holman (17m 59s):

Actually work? Yeah, no, it was all they do. it was all modeled in for for Arrow. A hundred percent. Huh. So super cool. So that’s,

Intro (18m 5s):

Those are gonna sell Well provided that they can make them fast enough. ’cause I remember they’re, it’s super low quantity right? Right

Sean P. Holman (18m 12s):

Now. Oh yeah. But I think they’re ramping up so we’ll, we’ll get ’em back on the show. I’m excited. It’s nice when you talk to some entrepreneurs who are like, Hey, we’re doing this. You’re like, ah, that’ll be awesome. Looks really good on paper. And then they come through and you’re like, damn.

Intro (18m 24s):

Yeah. I mean look, if you imagine your favorite boat. Yeah. This is the fiberglass you’d find in your favorite boat. Yeah. Yeah. It’s just really well sculpted.

Sean P. Holman (18m 31s):

But this is carbon fiber, so even, even crazier that is so super lightweight. Yeah, that’s nuts. And it uses an articulating subframe that allows it to flex separate from the frame on The truck. And it’s a different design that hasn’t been used before that they engineered should be really awesome for people who actually take their stuff off road.

Intro (18m 49s):
